Sometimes the decisions we make may not be the most adequate for our lives, but nonetheless we have to make those decisions in order to move on from one phase to another as we try to live our lives. In The Catcher In The Rye, Holden runs away from his fancy high school, Pency, 3 days before break begins. He felt isolated with no friends. â€Å"I almost wished I was dead† (48). Holden had just gotten in a fight with his roommate, Stradlater. Now Ackley was trying to have a conversation about the fight with Holden but he keeps talking nonsense to Ackley. In Ferris’ Buellers Day Off, Cameron, Ferris’ best friend always seems to be sick. His family isn’t really in his life and when they are, they seems to only bring him down. In the beging scene of Cameron, he is in bed acting like he’s dying. Holden says: â€Å".. she wouldn’t’ve been the ones that answered the phone. My parents would be the ones. So that was out† (pg. 59). He doesn’t seem to have a great relationship with his parents either. Holden wants to talk to his little sister Pheobe or anyone for that matter. He feels isolated within himself which makes him depressed. Cameron is the same in that he is very awkward and no one really seems to want to be friends with him. Towards the end of the book, Holden takes a visit to see Pheope but is unable to find her. He looks in the park and museum. â€Å"The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody’d move. You could go there a hundred thousand times, and that Eskimo would still be just finished catching those two fish, the birds would still be on their way south, the deer would still be drinking out of that water hole, with their pretty antlers and their pretty, skinny legs, and that squaw with the naked bosom ould still be weaving that same blanket† (pg. 121). Therefore, Holden would love to live in a world where everything stays frozen, where nothing changes. This way, Holden can never grow up to be an adult. Cameron is very mad after they got the car back because of all the miles that were added. He goes in to shock and is unable to m ove. Ferris and Sloan try their best to get him out of it but he won’t budge. While at the pool, Cameron falls in, almost committing suicide. Ferris jumps in to save. Cameron starts to laugh saying â€Å"I got you good†. Holden goes home to find Pheobe. Phoebe is the only person Holden seems to actually like and have a stable friendship throughout the novel. She is the only one who tries to push him to do better: â€Å"You don’t like any schools. You don’t like a million things† (pg. 169). When Holden hears this, he becomes upset and states: â€Å"`I do! That’s where you’re wrong-that’s exactly where you’re wrong! Why the hell do you have to say that†Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ I said. Boy, was she depressing me. Holden and Cameron are depressed teenagers who have suicidal thoughts because of depression. Depression: severe despondency and dejection, accompanied by feeling of hopelessness and inadequacy, a condition of mental disturbance, typicaly with lack of energy and difficulty in maintaining concentration or interest in life. People who are depressed don’t look for a way out. They have zero mot ivation and are always second guessing stuff. They think the only way out is death; suicide. Leadership Qualities of CEOs Essay Introduction Leadership styles and professional images are changing from the once unapproachable, egocentric executives to leaders who have humility and present a servant style leadership. Are these changes earnest or an attempt to modify negative perceptions of leaders engaging in corporate scandals and unethical behavior? Scholastic researchers identified positive shifting of paradigms towards expected characteristics and behavior. The identified changes include better codes of ethics, recognizing social capital, and evoking empowering leadership at all levels (Francis, Huang, Rajgopal, Zang, 2008; Garcà ­a-Sà ¡nchez, Rodrà ­guez-Domà ­nguez, Gallego-à lvarez, 2013; Makri Scandura, 2010; Ou, Tsui, Kinicki, Waldman, Zhixing, Jiwen Song, 2014; Peterson, Galvin, Lange, 2012; Zona, Minoja, Coda, 2013). Previous generations experienced leaders to portrayed narcissistic behaviors and people expected egotistical, manipulative, and exploitive mannerisms; today’s the same culture expects transformational leadership, leader-member exchanges, and sensitivity towards job performance and satisfaction (Peterson et al., 2012). These expectations require leaders to emphasize human capital and profit with equal importance, and humility in leaders no longer reflects low self-esteem but reflects positively with empowering leadership (Ou et al., 2014). The purpose of this paper is to analyze if the changing leader’s previous egocentric mannerisms to a more humble and servant leading style is earnest or a false projection of expectations. To accomplish this analysis, the paper will begin with an introduction of three currently recognized Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), define overarching leadership attributes and expected qualities, and conclude with a reflection of the qualities on the selected CEOs. The first question for analysis was, where does one begin to identify CEOs who are recognized by their peers? Recognized CEOs The journey begun with Forbes Fortune 500 list, then realized these rankings reflect the company’s overall performance and not a ranking of the characteristics of the respective CEOs. Similar enlightenment arose after reviewing Yahoo Finance pages for company’s rankings. Research led to an article in the Washington Business Journal (2013) by a staff writer on the most admired CEO awards 2013. Continuing this path, another article posted by CNNMoney covered nine specific CEOs and who they admired. This article selected nine CEOs from the Most Admired Top 50 CEOs in no apparent selection process and started with the number 20 ranked CEO, John chambers CEO Cisco, then to number 29 ranked Ken Chenault – CEO American Express, and then ended with Jim Sinegal – CEO Costco who ranked 21 of 50 (CNNMoney, 2010). The highest ranked CEO in the article was Bob McDonald – CEO Procter Gamble, who ranked 6 of 50; IBM received his admiration and did not reflect an other CEO he admired (CNNMoney, 2010). Eventually, a CBSNews article identifying LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner as the number 1 ranked CEO (Cochran, 2014). Glassdoor.com as an online jobs and career community for recruiting top talent, provide company reviews, and CEO reviews for over 6 million company profiles contained in their worldwide database (Glassdoor.com, 2014). Acknowledging this site is not a peer reviewed scholastic source, Glassdoor provides a ranking of CEOs based on employee perception of their executive’s performance for companies with over 1000 employees (Smith, 2014). For the purpose of this paper, the ranking of a CEOs characteristics, behaviors, and abilities determined by employees provides a viable source for all three identified CEOs keeping a core selection criteria based on employee perceptions of the CEOs. Leaders Recognized by Employees Jeff Weiner, CEO of LinkedIn ranked as the top rated CEO by employees (Glassdoor.com, 2014). Additionally, LinkedIn is ranked 1736 on Forbes Global 2000 companies ranked 3rd on Forbes 50 Best Places to Work (Forbes.com, 2014) (CNNMoney, 2014). Bloomberg Businessweek (2014) reported Weiner, age 43, received a total calculated compensation for the 2012 Fiscal Year of $1,175,400 after appointment to his position in 2009. According to Weiner’s Bloomberg (2014) profile he held appointments to Executive in Residence at Greylock Partners and Accel Management Co, Inc; Executive Vice President of Network Division of Yahoo! Egotistical leaders will remain in the corporate structure; however, there is a strong shifting of behaviors and characteristics that will force the egocentric leaders to change or retire. The support is found in strategic management and upper echelon theories that require CEOs to change focus towards effective firm-level outcomes driving philosophical influences on strategic direction and performance (Peterson et al., 2012). The American Way of War

The American Way of War Thesis: The United States has developed distinct American way of war. Since 1941, the United States of America had developed an American way of war based on technology, precise usage of power from distance and employment of Special Operation Forces (SOF) in order to find, fix and mark adversary forces and expose them to precise air and ground fire. Additionally, outstanding use of the Combined Arms Maneuver and incorporation of all available enablers distinguish the American way of war from other nations. The term American Way of War[1] was mentioned for a first time in early 1970s with the publication of The American Way of War written by Russel Weigley who examined the key political and military figures from George Washington to Robert McNamara and their approaches to the war. He wrote that The American Way of War seeks on the pursuit of a crushing military victory against opposing army, using a strategy of an attrition or annihilation. According to Weigley, the United States military and political leaders seek to destroy adversarys military capabilities and to conquer their capital city in order to force them to stop the war and to start postwar negotiations under already established United states terms and conditions.[2] Additionally, he made clear distinction between the United States Army and most of the European armies, meaning that the United States usually will capitalize their military victory achieving strategic success after war in order to keep or extend the influence by politics and diplomacy. Some writers argued that the United States did not develop The American Way of War and instead of the term mentioned above, they were arguing that the United States has developed The American Way of Battle[3], because the most of the western armies along with the US Army were studied Napoleon, Clausewitz, Moltke, and developed tactics, procedures and doctrines according to their way of warfare. Anyway, the one thing that distinguish the US Army from other western armies (British, German, French) especially after WW 2 was the US Army ability to bring to war more than some countries and armies could even imagine. During the WW 2, the United States Army destroyed most of the German and Japanese cities using strategic bombing on a daily base and making them incapable of conducting offensive operations and to sustain fighting for a long period of time. According to Max Boot, and his article The New American Way of War, he wrote that: the Civil War, World War I, and World War II were won not by tactical or strategic brilliance but by the sheer weight of numbers the awesome destructive power that only a fully mobilized and highly industrialized democracy can bring to bear.[4] The United States brought to the WW 2 more than many other country, and even more important, the United States were able to sustain that battle rhythm and to finish the WW 2, along with their allies as victorious. From the other side, conflicts in Korea and Vietnam shoved that the awesome destructive power[5] was not enough to achieve success, so after those two conflicts the United States Army started with the process of re building the broken army[6] examining the reasons of failure in those two conflicts and drawing lessons learned from them in order to improve negative sides and to sustain those good sides. After those two conflicts the morale, discipline and reediness of the US Army were lower and even worse than at any time in 20th Century and probably in the history of the United States Army. The Army leadership started with training and doctrinal reform and finally the adaptation of Field Manual 100-5 Operations, during 1976 was some kind of wake-up call for the Army. Even though the FM was widely criticized it brought the fundamental change in the way how army should see itself in a fight, in addition, the FM was a transition step that opened an intellectual dialogue across the Army.[7] Later on this FM was revised in 1982 and 1986 introducing and refining the Air Land Battle and soon after this concept will be proven during the Desert Storm campaign. Operation Desert Storm was turning moment and can be used as a first example how the United States developed an American way of war based on technology, an air power, usage of precisely guided ammunition (PGA), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), SOF and combined arms maneuver along with other enablers in order to defeat adversary forces for a short period of time and to achieve decisive victory. This operation was pure combination of combined arms maneuver supported by an air, maritime, and ground fire power, and can be connected to the traditional, firepower-intensive mode widely used during WW 2. The ground operation started with massive armored assault, after more than five weeks of precise bombing from air, land and sea guided by Special Operations Forces. During this operation the US Army adopted and proved the American Way of War, seeking a victory while having minimal casualties. The characteristics of new way of war were: speed, maneuver, flexibility, and surprise, supported by precision firepower, SOF, and psychological operations. The integration of air, ground and naval power into one synchronized matrix was more successful than the most optimistic predictions.[8] Operation Enduring Freedom is second example to explain the United States, or American way of war, based and highly dependent on technology, an air power, PGA, UAV, SOF, combined arms maneuver, and other critical enablers such as sustainment which is required for successful conduct of war. Also this operation showed ability to conduct the combined arms maneuver and to sustain operations in hostile environment such us terrain, extreme temperatures and poor infrastructure. Carefully examining terrain and the experience of the USSR during invasion of Afghanistan, the US Army did not fail into the same trap pouring ground forces into the country, and instead of making the same mistake, the US Army decided to fight with the Special Operation Forces and massive usage of precision guided-ammunition. Additionally, the SOF established connection with the Northern Alliance and provided support to fight Taliban regime. After two months of fighting Taliban regime collapsed and operation Enduring Freedom succeed. From the other side, small amount of ground forces at the beginning of operation could not cover escape routes from Afghanistan, and Osama bin Laden escaped Afghanistan with other top terrorists.[9] The operation Iraqi Freedom was even more successful compering with war in Afghanistan, and during this operation the United States Army, together with coalition forces, conducted truly combined-arms operation. Compering the numbers, Coalition forces deployed less than half size of units deployed during operation Desert Storm, anyway, it did not stop them to conquer al entire Iraq for a very short period of time with one-third of casualties and one-fourth the cost compering with the first operation. One more time the United States Army demonstrated ability to incorporate an air, sea and ground fire-power with combination of surgical strikes guided and conducted by Special Operation Forces in order to shape the battlefield for major operation. The Iraqi Forces deployed more than 450,000 troops in order to defend Iraq, it was not enough not only to slow down, but also to stop advance of Coalition Forces led by the United States Army. Doctrinally, the attacking forces must have 3 to 1 f orce ratio to be successful, and if operation is conducted in difficult terrain or urban areas, the ratio goes up to 6 to 1force ratio. In this case the Coalition forces had more than 3 to 1 disadvantage in numbers, anyway it did not stop them to achieve remarkable victory in a very short period of time. One more time the United States Army proved that the combined arms maneuver, supported with all the available enablers, is if not the only way, than definitely one among few possible ways how to conduct future military operations regardless the scale of operations, units and enablers.[10] Conclusion: After WW 2, the United States of America conducted several military operations and limited wars from Korea to Afghanistan and Iraq, and over the time has developed distinguished way of war based and highly dependent on technology and other enablers such us: air, naval and ground support discussed in this essay. Additionally, the United States Army uses every opportunity to analyze and conduct an after action reviews in order to derive lessons learned and to improve conduct of military operations. Also, ability to sustain military operations, regardless of time, differentiate an American way of war from other nations and their armed forces. So what: As LtC Steed described definition of winning as: winning is enhancing or improving interests and influence.[11] The only thing, or Big So What from this essay that I will take away is: The United States Army in case of war can bring to bear more than other countries can dream about. I would argue that having the United States of America as a true partner and friend can be really beneficial, especially for smaller countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina. We already gained a lot benefits having The United States as friend and partner and hope to improve and strengthen our relationship in the near future. Individuals’ rights of American people provided and guaranteed under fourth amendments of American constitution, Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), limited powers of security and law enforcement agencies are some of the obstacles that impede the way of the law enforment agencies to disrupt terrorist plots and prevent attacks inside the United States. But the other point of view is that these legal and constitutional provisions are not hindrance to security but are in accordance with cherished American ideals of personal freedom, right of privacy and the constitutional provision for no illegal and unjustified intrusion in the lives of American national. Bush administration defends new presidential orders and law-making on the grounds that old legal structures like FISA impede the speedy and agile actions needed to acquire the information about the activities of terrorists and their agents and to disrupt the acts of terrorism(Risen & Lichtblau, 2005). Another important aspect of this controversy is the violation of privacy rights provided under fourth amendments. For example, Bush order enabling NSA to conduct warrantless wiretapping is a violation of Fourth Amendment that protects the right of American Citizens against unreasonable surveillance. We all are well aware of the fact that Goverrnment’s intentions are good. Its sole motive is to authorize the agencies with necessary powers for speedy interception of terrorists’ activities. But there is a proper and lawful way to capacitate the security agencies with these authorities i. e. to formulate new laws if the previous ones are obsolete and not capable of handling the critical situation. And if the present surveillance system requires modifications and amendments, it must not be modified at the cost of the rights of privacy provided by fourth amendment.

Some are workhorse words the article the, the pronouns his and her, conjunctions like and, prepositions such as for, verbs like put and say. However, other three-letter words pack a lot of punch as nouns, adjectives, and verbs (sometimes adaptable to all three forms of speech), and are suitable for purposes as diverse as fitting into a tight headline or packing a punch in prose. Mattie Michael is a southern bell who ends up pregnant while being shelter and protected all her life by her strong willed and religious father. She moves away to survive on her own with her child. She becomes a working parent whose main purpose is to provide and survive for her child. She then turns into her father by sheltering her child into nothing but undisciplined loved. As he grows older with a passive mother he gets into some legal trouble that he cannot manipulate his way out of. Basil is locked up for involuntary murder and his mother puts up her house up for his bond, and Basil subjected to his selfishness fled the city and forced his mother into moving to Brewster place. The Women of Brewster Place, Etta Mae Johnson, Kiswana Browne Etta Mae Johnson is Mattie Michaels childhood friend and a free spirited woman who struggles with the desire and love she wants from a man. Etta Mae goes from man to man searching for her desire of love from a man she is willing to stay with. She searches for her love in the men who are flashy in appearance. She attends church with Mattie and meets Reverend Woods who she has a fling with, and only to realize after having sexual intercourse with him that it was all another desire and she didnt truly want him. Feeling yet again used and broken by herself she is delighted to find that the one person who loves her dearly and unconditionally is waiting up for her playing her songs. Kiswana Browne, unlike the previous two characters, chose to live in Brewster Place. Kiswana has dropped out of college running away from her past, in search of finding herself. She has changed her name and has family issues with her parents. When her mother returns she asks why has she changed her name and Kis wana releases anger and rage upon her mother telling her how she is a white mans nigger. Kiswanas mother explains to her the pride and heritage of her name and how proud she should be to carry on and be in this bloodline. The Women of Brewster Place, Luciela Louise Turner Luciela Louise Turner who appeared in the beginning of the novel as Miss Evas granddaughter who was abandoned by her parents and being raise by her grandmother until she passed away. Luciela is now all grown up with a child name Serena by Eugene. Eugene is portrayed as the typical man who had a baby with a woman that he was not ready for so in return he takes his regret and rage out on how he treats them. Eugene is jobless and does not help when it comes to their daughter. Eugene comes home one day lying about a job he was offered in Maine and how he had to leave immediately. Luciela knowing that it was all a lie began to argue with him and take her attention off Serena. Serena chasing a roach in their home while her parents fight sticks her hands into an electrical socket and dies. Luciela left with no child and an aborted child deals with her grief by sobbing into Matties arms. The Women of Brewster Place, Cora Lee Cora Lee had an enormous obsession with baby dolls when she was younger. Of course every child has a huge obsession that their parents think they will grow out of but this continued into adulthood. Cora Lees aunt told her when she was 16 years old that she should have some babies of her own and this sparked lightbulbs. Cora Lee was so infatuated with the ideas of babies that she conceived them for the idea alone not realizing that they grew older. Cora Lees children are neglected by her because she only knows how to care for them as infants. Kiswana notices Cora Lees children are neglected and invites them along with Cora to a Shakespeare play. Cora was inspired by the play
