A Report On Ficer Corps - 1012 Words
GySgt Daniel Daly once said, ââ¬Å"Any officer can get by on his sergeants. To be a sergeant you have to know your stuff. Iââ¬â¢d rather be an outstanding sergeant that just another officer.â⬠Imagining and Marine Corps without any NCOs is to imagine a Marine Corps that doesnââ¬â¢t exist. There would be no boot camp because there would be no drill instructors. There would be no outstanding specialists to transform into warrant officers; aircraft, weapons and trucks would rust and break down never to be repaired and finally and most importantly there would be no accountability. Noncommissioned officers are as old as war itself. In the seventh century the smallest tactical unit in the Roman legion was commanded by a centurion who is akin to a gunnery sergeant. The condottieri, or mercenaries, we professionals who served under any state that would pay and feed them; in their companies the ranks of corporal and sergeant were born. In 1778, Baron von Steuben wrote the main pur pose of the noncommissioned officer corps is to decentralize command authority in an orderly fashion down to the smallest element in an organization. In other words, NCOs exist to teach Marines, execute orders, take care of people and cushion the contact with officers. On becoming an NCO we receive a certificate of appointment; often referred to as a warrant. This document is the basis of our authority, rank, status and responsibilities and the words on it sum up the reasons why the Marine Corps
A Day Without Latinos Free Essays
Nine percent of Utahââ¬â¢s population is Latino or Hispanic.à And, at least thirty percent of the households of Utah have a Latino or Hispanic individual present, regardless of whether the immigrant is living as a relative or working as a maid in the household (Overview, 2004).à Indeed, the Latinos are very hard working people. We will write a custom essay sample on A Day Without Latinos or any similar topic only for you Order Now They are studying with other racial groups in schools and colleges, and although many of them feel that they are discriminated against, they have already proved themselves to be ââ¬Å"a growing and developing economic power baseâ⬠(Warner, 2004).à This means that the Latinos are rather important to the economy of Utah today. They are especially represented in the service industry.à Hotels, restaurants, the agricultural industry, construction and reconstruction ââ¬â a variety of businesses are using the help of Latinos.à What is more, Latinos are paid less than the other workers are on average.à For every 72 cents given to a Latino for his or her work, a person from another racial group gets a dollar (Media). Now if all Latinos were to leave Utah for a day, the economy would most definitely slow down and experience loss.à There would be countless absentees in the workplace, school attendance would fall, and those that discriminate against the Latinos would breathe a sigh of relief.à Still, the economy would bear the brunt of the departure of the Latinos. In order to produce the goods and provide the services that the Latinos were previously helping businesses to produce and to provide, businesses would have to hire for a day workers that would charge more than the Latinos do.à Budgets would have to be changed, as businesses face a rise in their expenditures. Moreover, businesses might decide to cut the supply of their products because of the increase in expenditures.à It may also be that businesses would not find replacements for the Latinos through the day.à Hence, businesses would have to slow down if not close down for the day.à In the long run, the economy of Utah would be seen to have been affected by the departure of the Latinos for a day. à à à à Utah, like all other states of America, thrives on diversity.à As a matter of fact, there is no state in America where diversity does not hold a very special place in the societal structure. People who are living with the Latinos, and those that study with young Latinos in schools and colleges would testify that Latinos do add value to their particular groups. When Latino maids in the home have to leave for a day, the mothers of the children for whom they had hired Latino maids, would also have to leave their workplaces in order to care for their children without maids.à This, too, would have an affect on the economy.à What is more, the value that Latinos add as family members is known only to the members of the households that Latinos occupy. A Latino wife or husband leaving home for a day might turn out to be a problem for the spouse.à And, when the effects of the losses are accumulated taking into consideration the entire society, it may become obvious that Latinos are indeed an interwoven part of the societal fabric that cannot be torn apart without negative consequences. Those that discriminate against the Latinos of Utah might breathe a sigh of relief in the absence of the Latinos.à Still, when the effects on the economy are brought into full view, the people that discriminated against the Latinos would also be seen to have been affected by the loss. Latinos are today akin to an engine in a factory that cannot be done away with although there are many other engines in the same factory performing the same kinds of tasks in a different way.à Seeing that the first engine is present is evidence enough that the engine is important to the factory.à Similarly, Utah cannot imagine itself without Latinos at present. This racial group has become an indispensable part of the lives of people who occupy Utah, in addition to their livelihood.à Gladys Gonzales, the editor and publisher of Mundo Hispano, explains this indispensability thus: ââ¬Å"We are bringing synergy to this stateâ⬠¦ We are hard workers with an entrepreneurial spirit. à We want to contribute positively to this state and this countryâ⬠(Warner). It is this positive attitude that has allowed the Latinos to be fairly successful in Utah, despite the problems that they might face in their personal or public lives. à Furthermore, the Latinos are expected to continue adding value to the society and the economy of the state.à Indeed, if the Latinos were to leave Utah for a day, they will be missed by their friends, employers, and customers in Utah. Even those that were displeased with the presence of the Latinos in Utah would face a loss as their favorite restaurants are closed down, and their businesses face an increase in expenditures.à Perhaps for such people, a day without Latinos would serve as a wake up call.à The Latinos would be anxiously awaited back in Utah. The European Economic Crisis
Introduction According to Foster, the economic crisis that is experienced in Europe is not an accident. It is completely an outcome of the basic policy mistakes that started being committed a long time ago and since then; they have been intensified in the course of time. It is believed that there are two main mistakes that have brought about the economic crisis.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The European Economic Crisis specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The first mistake is the adoption of a single currency, a move that was taken in the recent times, with no economic policy infrastructure in place that is vital for offering it protection (Foster, para 3). ââ¬Å"Without arguing the wisdom of the Euro one way or the other, the fact is that if it were purely a matter of economic policy, the Euro could have succeeded as envisionedâ⬠(Foster, para. 3). But prerequisites existed which were related to ââ¬Å"harm onization of labor policy, commercial policy, environmental policy and so forth, and in the absence of these it was imperative to harmonize fiscal policiesâ⬠(Foster, Para 3).Progress was made by Europe to a significant level in particular areas but little was done in some other areas. The other big mistake that was made was adopting a generous ââ¬Å"social welfare state without attending to the pro-growth policies necessary to sustain such a state in light of an increasingly competitive global economyâ⬠(Foster, para 3). Where there is no increasing global competition a ââ¬Å"slow-growth big government economic modelâ⬠is viable. In the presence of severe and increasing external pressures, the economic growth in Europe resulting from increasing productivity as well as improved economic competitiveness is not just of benefit but it is as well vital for the survival of a nation (Paulo 2). The problems arising from the European crisis that are face by the financial re gulators are going to be looked at and the possible measures to deal with these are also going to be presented. Problems Faced by the Regulators Following the Crisis In order to avoid ending the use of a single currency, the E.U must, at the present, set up a credible plan to deal with the future of the Eurozone. Only a proposal that considers the following four problems would be reliable and will convince markets to start again financing on a sustainable base. One of the problems, which are a painful realty, faced by the E.U is that some of the nations will not be in a position to pay back their debts and the default can not be avoided.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This is a realty that must be acknowledged by the E.U. The first country to do this is Greece. However, Greeceââ¬â¢s default in isolation would be controlled with ease since the funds involved are modest. H owever, the moment Greece defaults, there is a likelihood that other nations would follow suit. ââ¬Å"Even if a rescue of Greece, Ireland, and Portugal is affordable, there could be no realistic way of preventing Spain from taking the same courseâ⬠(Giavazzi and Kashyap, para 2). Another problem is that the banks in Europe are in danger since they possess significant amounts of the government debt. While the defaults get closer, the banking systems all over Europe could be exposed to an ââ¬Å"epic runâ⬠, while those who deposit as well as institutions ceases to be the banksââ¬â¢ customers in order to avoid incurring losses. The financial system in Europe is a ââ¬Å"bank-centeredâ⬠system. ââ¬Å"A run would cripple credit flows, plunging the Eurozone in to recession and creating a global financial crisisâ⬠(Giavazzi and Kashyap, para 3). Another issue is that, a program which guarantees the debt of all the nations is now in danger. Even if the nations such as France, Germany and other nations had wishes of offering a ââ¬Ëblanket guaranteeââ¬â¢, ââ¬Å"the amount of money that was involved, which was about three trillion Euros, would compromise these countriesââ¬â¢ credit ratingsâ⬠¦.having Spain as well as Italy in play, a full guarantee isnââ¬â¢t an optionâ⬠(Giavazzi and Kashyap, para 4). In addition, whatever rescue measure that can be taken has to go hand in hand with the steps to bring back growth and this is for the reason that there is no chance of paying back debts in the absence of economic expansion. Apart from Ireland, countries such as Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece face ââ¬Å"chronic problemsâ⬠. For instance, the per capita GDP of Italy has gone down, lower than it was twelve years ago. In case these nations do not take measures that will enable them to grow again, ââ¬Å"even a large haircut on the existing debt wonââ¬â¢t prevent the problems from re-emerging in a decadeâ⬠(Giavazzi an d Kashyap, para 5). The crisis in Europe came about because leaders in the region have not considered these constraints. This is the reason why several measures that have been taken within the last two years have not led to convincing the markets. It is quite unlucky that, in the face of these painful realities that have been presented above, no easy way out do exist. However, there is hope of getting out of these if some particular measures can be keenly taken. Measures to be taken One of the measures that have to be taken to deal with the European economic crisis is to put in place a strategy that focuses on strengthening banks to a level that they can bear up with a sovereign default. As pointed out by Giavazzi and Kashyap, the European powerful countries are supposed to ââ¬Å"pool their money and expand the European Financial Stability Fund to the point where it can backstop the banks against all losses from potential defaultsâ⬠(Giavazzi and Kashyap, para 9).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The European Economic Crisis specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The scale has to be adequate in order for it to as well cover the ensuing losses which the banks experience following writing insurance against a government default on top of covering direct losses on the ââ¬Å"government bond holdingsâ⬠of the banks. The whole amount that will be needed will be more than one trillion Euros ((ââ¬Å"Managing banks beyond the crisisâ⬠para 3). There are three conditions that have to come with the ââ¬Å"stability fundââ¬â¢s supportâ⬠to the banks. One of the conditions is that each and every major bank is supposed to be offered an estimate of the actual additional amount of capital that it requires. After this, the banks are supposed to be offered a window, probably a half a year, and in the course of this the banks are expected to ââ¬Å"raise capital from the private marketsâ⠬ (Giavazzi and Kashyap, para 10). The second condition is that the ââ¬Å"stability fundââ¬â¢s financial supportâ⬠is supposed to be there for all the large or major banks and offered to those banks which are not in a position to raise sufficient capital from the market. The money would be invested as ââ¬Å"preferred convertible sharesâ⬠having a dividend rate that is higher. In case there is injection of capital by stability fund, there will be replacement of the management. The result of having these conditions is the creation of a great incentive for the banks to look out for the private investors. Such a situation was at some point realized in the United Sates where, as pointed out by Giavazzi and Kashyap; ââ¬Å"after the U.S stress tests, all the banks found private financing rather than drawing on the backstop offered by the governmentâ⬠(Giavazzi and Kashyap Para 10). The last condition is that, in order for the banks to obtain the support, their govern ments (national) are supposed to come up with reliable plan for growth. The crucial elements of a plan like this would be steps taken to deregulate the commodity as well as service and labor markets. The national governments would have a half a year to carry out the enactment of legislation which corresponds to the time before the conversion of the stability fundââ¬â¢s money in to shares (ââ¬Å"Managing banks beyond the crisisâ⬠para 5). Conclusion The European economic crisis arose from the mistakes that were made in the past and have persisted to the present time. This has created painful realities that are being faced by the financial regulators. It is not easy to get out of this crisis. However, there is hope of getting out of it if there is commitment among the regulators and by them taking the appropriate measures, the crisis can be handled successfully. Works Cited Foster, J. What were the advantages of Tesco choosing their business location where they did Essays
What were the advantages of Tesco choosing their business location where they did Essays What were the advantages of Tesco choosing their business location where they did Essay What were the advantages of Tesco choosing their business location where they did Essay Tesco put a substantial amount of money into researching the best place for their new stores and after this research was complete they decided upon an area in the Homend close to the train station. There used to be a factory on the same site but it had been shut down and had become a derelict. This was good for many reasons; one was that it was easy for them to get planning permission for a new store from the council because the derelict factory was an eyesore to a town priding itself on its natural beauty. As well as being easy to get the permission to build on the site it was also very cheap to purchase the land much for the same reason as before. The area of the town was also very advantageous to the store with regards to its market. The store was built in a place that is within walking distance for the people that live in the town and also has easy access because of the by-pass and it being on the outskirts of the town. What are the advantages of Tescos site choice now? When the research is being done it is important to think about the future, it would be disadvantageous for a business to build on the outskirts of a town because it allows easy access for the lorrys then 10 years later they are surrounded because of the towns growth. Tescos obviously thought to the future because the advantages are still pretty much the same as when they first moved there. Since the building of the Tesco store there has been a tremendous amount of growth pertaining to the new trading estate, because of the location of the store it has been very advantageous to it as the housing estate has been placing houses close to the store but never getting in the way of goods transport. This is largely to do with it being closely situated to the train station so new housing estates are encouraged to build away from these areas.

Why the South Lost the Civil War
Why the South Lost the Civil War Although the reasons for the defeat of the Confederacy in the American Civil War are debated just as energetically as the causes of the war, the answer to the question, ââ¬Å"Why did the South lose the war?â⬠was actually answered a long time ago. Three Reasons of the Union Victory Some years after the war ended, Confederate General George Pickett ââ¬â who was actually a much better officer than his being the namesake of the famously doomed Pickettââ¬â¢s Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg might suggest ââ¬â was asked why he thought the South lost, to which he replied, ââ¬Å"I think the Yanks might have had something to do with it.â⬠The Confederacy did not lose the Civil War, the Union beat them, and it was not until the very last few months of the war that it was at all clear that they would. CAUSES OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR The reasons for the Union victory are usually described as advantages in three areas: resources, strategy, and performance on the battlefield. While it is true that the North ultimately bested the South in all three, these advantages were for much of the war either not as great as they appear now, or were not well-applied; and the forces of the Confederacy had some considerable advantages of their own. Reason 1: Resources Confederate General Robert E. Lee certainly thought the disparity of resources between the North and South was to blame for the Confederate defeat; after surrendering the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox on April 10, 1865, he explained in his farewell address to his soldiers, ââ¬Å"After four yearsââ¬â¢ arduous service, marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude, declared Lee, the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources.â⬠That was a bit of an understatement; the Union had two-and-a-half times the population of the South, had a vastly superior road and rail network, and when the war began, was producing over 90 percent of the countryââ¬â¢s iron and very nearly all of its weapons, industrial advantages that only increased significantly as the war progressed. The Confederacy relied almost entirely on trade with Europe and the Northern states for industrial goods; for example, there was only one factory in the south ââ¬â the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond, Virginia ââ¬â that was capable of producing large weapons, iron plating for ships, and heavy locomotive components. Nonetheless, the South managed to keep itself supplied for much longer than the differences in capabilities suggest it should have. While the Union blockade of the Confederacy ââ¬â helped immensely by the capture of important ports such as New Orleans, Mobile, and Wilmington ââ¬â did almost completely stop the flow of material from other countries after 1862, illicit trade with the North through the border states of Kentucky, Missouri, and Maryland was harder to stop, and kept a trickle of much-needed supplies flowing right up to the very end of the war. Reason 2: Strategy One aspect of the Confederate defeat that is debatable is the degree to which the strategy by which they pursued the war was imposed on them by political realities versus how much of it was the result of poor decision-making. All the South had to do was defend itself; the onus was on the North to ââ¬Ëtake backââ¬â¢ the rebellious part of the country. The Confederacy, however, comprised a huge territory, nearly 750,000 square miles. Some Southern military leaders, most notably General Joseph E. Johnston, advocated what in hindsight probably would have been a sound defensive strategy: giving up territory to defend key places like the major cities and doing most of the fighting with the North using guerrilla forces. The prevailing view, however, was that recognition of the Confederate States of America by other countries like England and France (and the desperately needed military assistance that would have come with it) was only possible if the South could demonstrate that it was a legitimate nation that could defend itself. That meant facing the Union forces in conventional fashion, defending the entire Confederate territory, and taking the fight to the Union where possible; this was the strategy preferred by Confederate leader Jefferson Davis (who unlike his Union counterpart Abraham Lincoln had extensive military experience) and General Lee. The unavoidable problem with the Southern strategic situation is that the initiative lay entirely with the North; Union forces could strike wherever it seemed most advantageous to do so, and the Confederate forces would largely be limited to reacting to it. To be fair, they did so magnificently more often than not. Leeââ¬â¢s repeated offensive-defensive campaigns in response to Union invasions of Virginia stymied the North ââ¬â and almost ended the war in mid-1864 ââ¬â until the final few months of the conflict, and even in the face of the brilliant war of maneuver conducted by Union generals Grant, Sherman, and George Thomas in the West, Confederate leaders like Johnston, Braxton Bragg (a general to whom history has, quite unfairly, not been kind), and Nathan Bedford Forrest presented a formidable challenge and delayed the eventual Southern defeat. Reason 3: Performance on the Battlefield One of the obvious reasons the Civil War was the most savage conflict ever fought by American soldiers is that from the highest generals to the lowest privates in the ranks, the two forces were so evenly matched in terms of talent and motivation, even if the advantage of numbers went to the Union. Most of the leaders on both sides had trained and served together in the pre-war Army; many were brothers-in-arms as young officers in the Mexican War 20 years earlier. The conventional view that ââ¬Å"Southerners made better soldiersâ⬠because most of them were farmers, handy with weapons and horses and used to rough living, overlooks the fact that an overwhelming number of Union troops were from the farming states in the upper Midwest. For example, the famed ââ¬Å"Iron Brigadeâ⬠of the Army of the Potomac, one of the most-feared units in either army, and one of the few who could claim to have defeated the equally-renowned Stonewall Jackson was made up entirely of men from Wisc onsin, Michigan, and Indiana. The advantage to the Union on the battlefield largely came about because of its superiority in firepower and numbers, but also because Southern leaders made a few more bad decisions at wrong times than their Union foes. Leeââ¬â¢s two invasions of the North ââ¬â which ended in the horrific battles of Antietam and Gettysburg ââ¬â were unnecessary and costly strategic mistakes, compounded by a number of uncharacteristic errors during both campaigns. Likewise in the West, General Braggââ¬â¢s outstanding victory at Chickamauga was wasted when he failed to follow up on it, allowing Grant to come to the rescue and eventually defeat Bragg at Chattanooga. Could the Confederacy have won the Civil War? The weight of evidence tips the balance towards the answer, ââ¬Å"Probably not.â⬠Yet the question is still interesting and worth discussing, even after 150 years. WHEN IS MILITARY FORCE JUSTIFIED? An excellent, detailed history of the Civil War can be found in James M. McPhersonââ¬â¢s 1988 book, Battle Cry of Freedom, which explains the Civil War in-depth from the end of the Mexican War in 1847 to the tragic assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865.

2 short cases Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
2 short cases - Essay Example Originally, he agreed to lend me the amount without interest as long as I pay it back on time. I had used the borrowed money to buy some school books and also some decent clothes. I had planned to pay it back on time using my earnings from my part-time job waiting on restaurant tables in my spare time on weekends when I am not so busy. My dilemma is that I now already have the $100 in my pocket, ready to pay him back. A totally unexpected problem came up just the other day, with my mom informing me my grandma had suffered another of her usual asthma attacks and needed some medication immediately. This out-of-the-blue development caught me by surprise since grandma had been well long enough in this regard, meaning she had not suffered asthma for several years already and I had thought she had finally gotten over this ailment. My mom called up me to buy my grandma her medicine at a nearest drugstore within our locality. The problem was that just a few minutes earlier, I called up my friend and informed him I was going to his place to hand him back his money as repayment and as a fulfillment of my promise a month earlier to pay it back on time. Our neighborhood is a bit run down and is on the poorer side of our community. As such, it has been a haven for petty criminals although I have some friends among them. These friends are usually just juvenile delinquents who have plenty of time on their hands and nothing better to do with their spare time and extra energies. The key to survival in this part of town is to just keep your head down and mind you own business so nobody will interfere with you also. On one of my shopping expeditions in one of our neighborhood grocery outlets, I meet 2 former school mates from high school. They both said they have no jobs and had fallen on hard times brought by the economic downturn. They were looking for a job and both

Analyzing the Gender Roles Presented in TV Serials Essay
Analyzing the Gender Roles Presented in TV Serials - Essay Example This paper will juxtapose three very popular TV analyzing the gender roles presented in them. ââ¬Å"Everybody love Raymond is another very popular TV show which has been very well liked and followed.â⬠(Everybody loves lazy stereotyping of male roles)The concept of Gender roles must be noticed in this serial, Debra the wife of Raymond is always in the kitchen making food either for her husband or for her family, this goes to show that women are always in the kitchen spending their time cooking for their families. Marxist feminism also comes into play here, Karl Marx argues that women must be paid for domestic labor, this is what Marxist feminism is all about. Another very important thing which must be noticed in this show is that Debra is the one who always packs the lunch of her children; Raymond never bothers to do this. It goes to show how irresponsible at times men are towards their families. ââ¬Å"The gender roles presented in these serials are presented very rightly afte r doing comprehensive research.â⬠(Gender and Media Representation) Gilman called herself a humanist, she was deadly against exploitation of women, our society is still following the patriarchal ways and exploiting the women. She was not very comfortable accepting the theory of evolution laid down by Charles Darwin, the theory of evolution portrays man in the driving seat and gives less importance to women. Both the sexes are equally important and no favoritism of any sort can be done. She argued that women had to rely excessively on their sexual assets, they had to please their husband to ensure their survival, this is very true and beyond the pale. Grounded for life is another very popular TV show which is well liked by the audience. In one episode the husband decides to buy a car without even bothering to ask his wife, marriage is an institution and it is the right of the wife to be well informed about all the decisions made by her husband. This again reflects the reality; t here are countless husbands who do not bother asking their better halves before making an important decision. Dad goes to work and Mom takes care of the household chores, it is unacceptable if a man packs lunch for his children, it is unacceptable if a man does the dishes. It is incorrect if a man asks his wife before making a big decision, buying a car is quite a big decision and a wife must know of this big decision before hand. Perkins Gilman was a very famous American sociologist who wanted to bring about change in the society, it is our duty to share the workload with women, and it is not a manââ¬â¢s world anymore. Women must be given respect and their workload must be shared. It is very important to understand the responsibilities of living in a family, gender stenotypes must be abolished and we must awake to a new and a better world. Conclusion To conclude it is very fair to say that women must be respected and we must shed our stereotypical thinking for the best. This is the need of the hour and we must put an end to this forever. Once this ends we would stop seeing stereotypes in TV shows and even the TV shows would become much better than ever, it will benefit each and every one of us. The three shows that
